Student of the Month Awards:

Two students from each class in every grade are nominated by their teacher for the Student of the Month award.  The program runs from October to April. Two students from every class,  are chosen to receive the award each month, based on exhibiting good citizenship and the character trait highlighted each month.  Each month’s character trait that is honored is listed below:

October: Respect
November: Integrity
January: Courage
February: Empathy
March: Responsibility
April: Honesty

At the beginning of each school year, holds an information session with each teacher and their class, about the award and how to earn it. Each month, all of the students of the month are honored at an after school celebration from 3:00-3:30PM in the elementary school, typically scheduled during the last week of the month.  Students who have received the award, as well as their parents are invited to the celebration.  During the award ceremony, each student stands at a podium, reads the definition of the trait they have been recognized as exemplifying, and reads a quote that shows or discusses the trait.  The emphasis is on getting experience in public speaking in students’ education.  Cookies and juice are served at the celebration.

Reading Events:

  • Time Out for Reading (Put Your Nose in a Book!) — hosted by the Northwest Indiana Literacy Coalition
  • Read Across America (Dr. Seuss’s Birthday) — On March 2nd, students participate in Dr. Suess activities, and read books in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday.
