Firm makes Supplies Donation to Gary Charter School

GARY — Pupils at 21st Century Charter School went home with a backpacks full of school supplies Friday courtesy of an Illinois company.

Stericycle Inc., of Northbrook, Illinois, donated back-to-school supplies for kindergarten through fourth grade students. Children received neon green reusable lunch bags, pencils, notebooks, paper, glue, pens, backpacks and more.

The Stericycle mascot, a teddy bear, received hugs and high fives from the students in each classroom. Hyfaa Karki, technical manager at Stericycle, said employees from the Gary office provided all of the school supplies for the students as a continuing partnership with 21st Century Charter, 556 Washington St.

“Our partnership started last year when we held a book drive for the students and we eventually adopted the school as a way to continue to give back to the community. We also participated in a clean-out where we provided trees and plants for the outside landscaping,” Karki said.

“We want to continue to grow a relationship with the school. We enjoy doing this.”

Assistant principal Chantel Dailey-Bullock said Stericycle’s partnership is one of many efforts done at the school. A barbecue for parents, students, teachers and staff was held later in the day and an open house is set for Sept. 16.
